San Diego CityBeat is taking submissions for their annual super-short-story contest: Fiction 101. The catch? Each story has to be 101 words exactly. You have until October 20 to get your story in, so get cracking!

Dildos R Us
Last week I had the pleasure of speaking with Chuck Palahniuk about his new novel Beautiful You for San Diego CityBeat’s Fall Arts Preview. We talked about dildos, pornography, and his upcoming visit to San Diego.
Beautiful You, which sounds like a feminine hygiene product, has a cult-like power over its customers.
“I wanted [the name of the company to be] something euphemistic but also… flattering and attractive. And, also, I wanted two words—two words that would be enticing but wouldn’t make any sense in and of themselves.”

Viva Babymetal
Nuvia took me to see Babymetal on my birthday and I wrote all about it at The Weeklings:
Nuvia and I stood in front of the sound engineers’ booth. The performance involved several pre-recorded bits so they were busy throughout the show. There was one guy who wasn’t busy it all, and he studiously avoided watching the show. It was like a performance art piece. He was refusing to acknowledge the spectacle that he had helped create. If there is a god, I imagine this is what he’s like: scrolling through social media, spam, old sexts, and goat videos while the world collapses upon itself.
I also wrote about Babymetal for my column in Razorcake #80.

BSP: Any advice to writers out there on how to jump those hurdles?
JR: The world owes you nothing, but it’s not out to get you either. You are your own worst enemy. The sooner you figure out the ways you sabotage your work, the better.
